Santa Barbara I Madonnari Festival--May 2003
This was the first painting we did with just three of us working on the square--Cheryl, Wayne, and Wayne's brother David. The subject is a photograph of an orphaned Afghan girl in a refugee camp, taken by Steve McCurry for National Geographic. Yes, we know they found her again...we heard variations on the story all weekend while we worked on the artwork. I thought of the photo as an interesting twist on the Madonna theme, as well as simply a striking image.
